Topic: Brainstorming, The First-Step in Creative Problem-Solving
Most everyone knows the basics of brain-storming and that it can be used to generate new and innovative ideas to achieve a particular objective. But like any technique, there are some specific approaches that can maximize the effectiveness of the brain-storming session and lead to more useful, creative results. This presentation/demonstration will address two aspects of the brain-storming process which can be particularly challenging for groups, especially in a business context:
1. True, spontaneous free-association.
2. Agreement and Addition.
True spontaneity is difficult for most adults, since we spend most of our days trying to make order out of chaos, and spontaneous free-association is, in a sense, asking our brains to make chaos out of order. Agreement & Addition is a method for developing ideas rather than shooting them down. This is crucial for brain-storming, but also has the ancillary result of creating a more positive and collaborative communication style.
Michael Rock began his career as a performer. He performed on Broadway, on tour and in elementary schools all over the country. After ten years as a performer, he began to transition into being a director and college instructor. He directed experimental work, children's theatre and almost everything in between. He taught improvisation and acting for NYU, Marymount Manhattan College and Ringling Bros. Clown College as well as many others. Ten years ago, he began the third phase of his career, working as an improvisation-based corporate trainer. He has helped clients such as PIMCO, PwC, Eli-Lilly, Pepsico and the US Olympic team develop communication, management and mentoring skills as well as a more collaborative and creative corporate environment. He also teaches improv for creativity and communication skills at Long Island Improv.
